Doctor Huber started his training in the ORL-BAL group (Aarau and Basel). Following a residency in Basel, he trained in Calgary (Professor J. Dort) and returned to the University ORL Department in Zürich (Professor R. Probst) as Lead of the Head and Neck Surgery Division. In his lecture on “Understanding the enemy – another aspect of surgical oncology” he reviewed the most recent concepts in the treatment of head and neck tumors, stressing the importance of basic research as well as an interdisciplinary approach to tumor disease. Most of his former colleagues from Aarau and Basel were present and joined the festivities after Gerry’s brilliant lecture. In the same lecture theater, in 1947, Winston Churchill pronounced his famous call to students, to “…let Europe grow”.

Gerhard („Gerry“) Huber hat seine Ausbildung im Rahmen der ORL-BAL angefangen (Aarau und Basel) um sie in Calgary bei Professor J. Dort fortzusetzen und dort speziell seine Kentnisse in der Hals- und Gesichtschirurgie zu verfeinern. Seit seiner Rückkehr leitet er die onkologische Chirurgie an der ORL Klinik (Direktor Prof. R. Probst). Er hat den interdisziplinären Zugang zu Tumorerkrankungen in unserem Fachgebiet, unter Betonung der unabdingbaren Grundlagenforschung in einen anschaulichen Vortrag unter dem Titel: „Den Feind verstehen – ein anderer Aspekt der chirurgischen Onkologie“ dargestellt. Er erntete grossen und verdienten Beifall. Die meisten seiner alter Aarauer und Basler Kollegen waren zugegen, und feierten mit. Im gleichen Saal hat Winston Churchill seine berühmte Rede über die Notwendigkeit der Vereinigung von Europa gehalten.

Docent Huber, koji je svoju specijalizaciju započeo u ORL BAL (Aarau i Basel), otišao u Kanadu (prof. J. Dort) na subspecijalizaciju hirurgije glave i vrata, zatim prešao na cirišku kliniku kod prof. R. Probsta i postao načelnik onkološkog hirurškog tima, održao je pristupno predavanje na Univerzitetu pod naslovom „Razumeti neprijatelja – jedan od aspekata hirurške onkologije“. Predstavio je novije hirurške i interdisciplinarne pristupe tumorima glave i vrata, na čijem istraživanju i prvoj primeni je učestvovao. Većina njegovih kolega iz BAL grupe bila je prisutna i radovala se Gerryjevom uspehu. U Švajcarskoj pristupna predavanja posle izbora za docenta uglavnom otvaraju put prema zvanju profesora, pod uslovom nastavljanja intenzivnog naučnog i nastavnog rada u toku od oko 5 do 7 godina. U istoj sali, 1947 godine je Vinston Čerčil održao svoje istorijsko predavanje studentima gde ih je pozvao da doprinesu izgradnji Evrope.
